NPA 216 established as an original area code

Area code 216 was established in 1947 as one of the original North American area codes. It initially covered the northeastern quadrant of Ohio, including Cleveland and surrounding areas.

NPA 330 split from 216

Area code 330 was created in 1996 from a split of area code 216, serving the southern portion of the original 216 territory including Akron and Canton.

Area code 330 was created on March 9, 1996, as a geographic split from area code 216. This was the first new area code in Ohio since the original North American Numbering Plan assignments in 1947, serving the Akron, Canton, Youngstown, and Warren areas.

NPA 440 split from 216

In 1997, area code 440 was created from a split of area code 216. The new area code was assigned to the eastern and western portions of the original 216 area, surrounding the Cleveland metropolitan area, leaving 216 centered on Cleveland and most inner-ring suburbs in Cuyahoga County.

Area code 440 was created on August 16, 1997, as part of a split from area code 216 to serve the suburbs surrounding Cleveland in northern Ohio, addressing number exhaustion caused by population growth and cellular usage.

Overlay relief was applied to 440 rather than 216

NANPA planning materials for the 440/436 overlay show that later relief in northern Ohio was applied to 440, while 216 remained without an overlay.

NPA 216 projected not to need relief until 2046

The 2025-1 NANPA exhaust analysis projected that area code 216 would not need relief until 2046.
