In 1998, area code 225 was created in a split from 504, serving the Baton Rouge area and the western portion of the original numbering plan area. Area code 504 was reduced to the New Orleans metropolitan area and nearby parishes.

On August 17, 1998, area code 225 was created from a split of area code 504, serving the Baton Rouge metropolitan area and surrounding parishes in southern Louisiana. It was the first new area code in Louisiana in 41 years.
