NPA 228 split from 601

Area code 228 was created in 1997 when the Gulf Coast region of Mississippi, including Hancock, Harrison, and Jackson counties, was split from the original statewide area code 601. This change was implemented to accommodate growing demand for telephone numbers in the region, reducing the coverage of 601 to central and southern Mississippi, excluding the Gulf Coast.
