Activation of area code 321 in Florida

Area code 321 was activated in November 1999 for Brevard County and the Space Coast region of Florida. The code was introduced as a 'vanity' area code referencing the countdown sequence for Cape Canaveral launches, following a petition by Robert Osband. Voluntary use began in November 1999, with permanent assignment planned for the following year.

Area code 321 overlay introduced for Orlando area

Area code 321 was activated in 2000 as an overlay for the Orlando area in Florida, covering Brevard and Seminole counties and the Space Coast region. The code was chosen to reflect the countdown sequence used in space launches from Cape Canaveral.

Area code 321 was created in October 2000 as a split from 407 specifically for Brevard County, and was simultaneously overlaid on Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties. The small portion of Volusia County in 407 continued using 407.

In 2003, it was announced that all new telephone numbers in Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties would no longer be issued in area code 321. Existing 321 numbers in the Orlando metro area were retained, but new assignments were limited to Brevard County.

NPA 689 overlay on 407

In June 2019, area code 689 was assigned as an overlay of area code 407, providing additional numbering resources for the Orlando area. The overlay did not apply to the standalone 321 area in Brevard County, which remains primarily focused on that region.

Permissive 10-digit dialing begins for area code 321

On April 24, 2021, permissive 10-digit dialing began for area code 321 in areas not overlaid by 407. This transition was part of a nationwide change to accommodate the new 988 code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

Mandatory 10-digit dialing for area code 321

Mandatory 10-digit dialing was implemented for area code 321 on October 24, 2021, in compliance with the FCC's order to support the 988 National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. After this date, all local calls required the area code.
