NPA 347 overlays 718 in New York City

On October 1, 1999, area code 347 was introduced as an overlay for the 718 area code, covering the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and Marble Hill. This was the first overlay in the region, allowing both codes to serve the same geographic area and was implemented to provide additional numbering resources for the growing population.

Mandatory ten-digit dialing for 718/347 area codes

Mandatory ten-digit dialing was implemented for the 718/347 numbering plan area by April 15, 2000. All local calls within and between these area codes required the use of the full ten-digit number to accommodate the overlay and ensure proper call routing.

PSC approves overlay of NPA 929 over 718/347

On December 16, 2009, the New York Public Service Commission approved an all-services overlay of area code 929 over the existing 718 and 347 area codes to provide additional numbering resources for the outer boroughs of New York City. This decision was made to address the projected exhaustion of available numbers. The approval included the addition of a new overlay area code for the 718/347 region.

Area code 929 was activated on April 16, 2011, as an overlay for the 718 and 347 area codes, serving the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and Marble Hill. The overlay provided additional numbering resources for the region.

PSC approves all-services overlay with NPA 465

On January 24, 2025, the New York Public Service Commission approved an all-services distributed overlay for the 347/718/917/929 area codes, paving the way for the introduction of area code 465 in response to projected number exhaustion.
