NPA 210 split from 512

In 1992, area code 210 was created from a split of 512, taking over the western part of the territory including San Antonio and the Rio Grande Valley. Austin retained 512 to minimize disruption to state government operations.

Area code 210 was created on November 1, 1992, as a split from area code 512, covering San Antonio, most of the Hill Country, and the Rio Grande Valley. The split was intended to relieve exchanges in the Austin–San Antonio corridor, with Austin retaining 512 to minimize disruption to state agencies.

Creation of area code 361 from 512

On February 13, 1999, area code 361 was created in a split from area code 512, which reduced 512 to its current size centered on Austin and nearby counties. The new code served the Corpus Christi area, the Coastal Bend, and the Victoria Crossroads in Texas.

Permissive ten-digit dialing begins in 512 in December 2012

In December 2012, a permissive dialing period began in the 512 area code region, allowing both seven- and ten-digit dialing for local calls. This transition was implemented in preparation for the introduction of the 737 overlay.

Mandatory ten-digit dialing in 512 in June 2013

Mandatory ten-digit dialing was implemented in June 2013 within the 512 area code territory as part of the overlay plan with area code 737.

NPA 737 introduced as overlay of 512 in July 2013

In July 2013, area code 737 was introduced as an overlay to area code 512 to address number exhaustion in the Austin region. Both codes now serve the same geographic region, including Austin and its suburbs. The overlay required all new numbers to potentially receive the 737 code, while existing 512 numbers remained unchanged.
