Area code 517 was created in 1947 as one of the original North American area codes. It initially served the eastern half of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, excluding the southeast region assigned to 313, and was separated from 616 by a line running through the state.

Area code 989 was created in 2001 when it split from area code 517, dividing the eastern half of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. The new code served Central Michigan, while 517 continued to serve the south-central region.
