Initial assignment of area code 612 in Minnesota

Area code 612 was assigned in 1947 as part of the original nationwide telephone numbering plan, covering the southeastern third of Minnesota including the entire Twin Cities region.

Minnesota area code boundaries redrawn

In 1954, the boundaries of Minnesota's area codes were redrawn to avoid cutting across major toll traffic routes. Area code 218 was shifted to cover the northern band of the state, 612 covered the central band, and the new area code 507 was created for the southern band, including Rochester and Mankato. The southern portion of the old 218 and the southern portion of 612 were merged to form 507, while 218 absorbed part of the old 612's eastern portion.

Area code 507 was created in 1954 by combining the southern portion of the original 612 territory and the southwestern portion of 218. The 612 area was rotated to cover central Minnesota, and 218 was reshaped to cover the northern half of the state.

Area code 651 was created in 1996 by splitting area code 612 to serve St. Paul and the eastern suburbs of the Twin Cities, to address number exhaustion.

NPA 320 split from 612

Area code 320 was created on March 17, 1996, in a split from area code 612. The new code served most of central Minnesota outside the Twin Cities metro region, marking the first new Minnesota area code in 42 years.

Exchanges moved from 612/320 to 507

On March 17, 1996, as part of the 612/320 split, some exchanges in Red Wing, Wabasha, Goodhue, Lake City, and White Rock were migrated to area code 507 instead of receiving the new 320 code. This required central office and station number changes to avoid numbering conflicts in NPA 507.

Due to continued growth and number demand, area code 612 was split in 2000 into three parts: Minneapolis and nearby suburbs retained 612; northwest suburbs received 763; southwest suburbs received 952. This split followed municipal boundaries rather than exchange boundaries.

Permissive dialing begins for 763 and 952

A permissive dialing period began on February 27, 2000, allowing calls to be completed using either the old 612 code or the new 763 and 952 codes for numbers in the affected areas.

Mandatory dialing for 763 and 952

Mandatory dialing of the new area codes 763 and 952 began on January 14, 2001, ending the permissive period for most customers. Calls dialed with the old 612 code for numbers in the new NPAs were routed to intercept.

Extended mandatory dialing for alarm customers

For burglar and fire alarm customers, the permissive dialing period for area codes 763 and 952 was extended until November 1, 2001, after which mandatory dialing of the new codes was required.
