NPA 614 assigned as original Ohio area code

In 1947, area code 614 was assigned as one of the original area codes for Ohio under the North American Numbering Plan. It initially covered the southeastern quadrant of the state, including Columbus and extending to the Ohio River.

NPA 740 split from 614

On November 8, 1997, area code 740 was established by splitting from area code 614. The new code served southeastern and central Ohio, excluding Columbus and most of Franklin County, to address the growing demand for telephone numbers in the region.

In 1998, nearly all of the southern portion of the old 614 territory was split into the new area code 740. This reduced the 614 area to primarily serve Columbus and its immediate suburbs.

Overlay of 614 with 380 approved

On June 27, 2001, the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio approved an all-services overlay for the 614 area code with the new 380 area code. Implementation was delayed due to number pooling and slower-than-expected growth, and the status is planned.

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio directed the telecommunications industry to implement the 380 overlay on the 614 area code on January 14, 2015, setting the stage for the introduction of the new code and mandatory ten-digit dialing.

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio instructed the telecommunications industry to implement area code 380 as an overlay for 614 to address number exhaustion, with implementation planned for February 27, 2016.

Permissive ten-digit dialing begins for 614/380

Permissive ten-digit dialing began for both the 614 and 380 area codes on August 1, 2015, allowing callers to use either seven or ten digits for local calls during the transition period.

Mandatory ten-digit dialing begins in 614/380 overlay

Ten-digit local dialing became mandatory in the 614/380 overlay complex on January 30, 2016, to accommodate the new overlay area code 380 introduced to central Ohio.

Area code 380 was activated as an overlay to area code 614 on February 27, 2016, providing additional numbering resources for the Columbus metropolitan area.
