Area code 616 introduced as original Michigan area code

Area code 616 was one of the original North American area codes created in 1947. It covered the western part of Michigan, including the western half of the Lower Peninsula and all of the Upper Peninsula, making it the largest Michigan area code at the time.

Area code 231 was created in 1999 when the northwestern Lower Peninsula, including Muskegon, Traverse City, and Cadillac, was split from area code 616. This reduced the territory of 616 to the core of West Michigan.

In June 1999, area code 231 was created by splitting from area code 616. The new area code was assigned to the northwestern portion of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, including communities such as Traverse City, Muskegon, and other communities, while 616 continued to serve the southwestern region.

Area code 269 was created in 2002 when the lower third of the old 616 territory, including Kalamazoo and Battle Creek, was split off. This left 616 serving the Grand Rapids area and nearby counties.

On July 13, 2002, area code 269 was created as a split from area code 616. The new area code was assigned to the southwest portion of Michigan's Lower Peninsula, including cities such as Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, and Benton Harbor.

Permissive 10-digit dialing begins in 616

Permissive 10-digit dialing began on April 24, 2021, in area code 616 as part of the nationwide transition to accommodate 988 as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Callers could use either 7 or 10 digits during this period.

Mandatory 10-digit dialing in 616

Mandatory 10-digit dialing was implemented in area code 616 on October 24, 2021, following the designation of 988 as a 3-digit code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Seven-digit dialing was discontinued to resolve conflicts with the 988 central office code.
