NPA 901 introduced for all of Tennessee

Area code 901 was introduced in 1947 as one of the original North American area codes, covering the entire state of Tennessee. It remained the sole area code for the state until subsequent splits reduced its coverage.

NPA 901 split to create 615

Tennessee was divided into two numbering plan areas in 1954. Area code 615 was assigned to the eastern two-thirds of the state, while 901 continued to serve West Tennessee. The split was a flash-cut, reducing 901 to West Tennessee and assigning 615 to Middle and East Tennessee.

Area code 731 was created in September 2001 from a geographic split of area code 901. The new code was assigned to western Tennessee, while 901 was retained for the Memphis metropolitan area.

NPA 731 split from 901 for most of West Tennessee

Area code 731 was assigned on September 17, 2001, to most of West Tennessee outside the immediate Memphis area. As a result, area code 901 was reduced to cover only Shelby, Fayette, Hardeman, and Tipton counties.

According to 2021 projections, area code 901 is not expected to require relief until about 2035. The code remains one of the few urban area codes not overlaid, allowing seven-digit dialing in Memphis.
