NPA 910 split from 919 in North Carolina

Area code 910 was created in 1993 in southeastern North Carolina, splitting from area code 919, to serve Wilmington, Jacksonville, Laurinburg, Lumberton, and Fayetteville. The split involved the western and southern portions of the 919 area, including the Piedmont Triad, Sandhills, and southeastern coast, to accommodate growing demand for telephone numbers.

Area code 336 was created on December 15, 1997, as a geographic split from area code 910, covering north-central and northwestern North Carolina including the Piedmont Triad region. The split served to provide additional numbering resources for the Piedmont Triad and surrounding areas, with the southeastern portion of the old 910 territory retaining 910.

Transition to 10-digit dialing for 910 due to 988 implementation

The 910 area code was required to transition to ten-digit dialing by October 24, 2021, because of the nationwide designation of 988 as a dialing code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

Ten-digit dialing became mandatory for area code 910 after October 24, 2021, due to the nationwide designation of 988 as a three-digit code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
