NPA 972 announced as relief for 214

NANPA Information Letter IL-95-03-002 announced the 972 relief plan for the 214 region in 1995, prior to the final Dallas-area configuration.

NPA 972 split from 214

Area code 972 was created in 1996 by splitting off all of the old 214 territory outside Dallas and Dallas County, as a response to rapid growth and increased demand for numbers, addressing number exhaustion.

Introduction of NPA 469 and conversion of 972 to overlay in Dallas region

On July 1, 1999, area code 469 was introduced as an overlay for most of the eastern Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. At the same time, the boundary between 214 and 972 was removed, converting 972 into an overlay for the entire region. This created a three-code overlay complex requiring ten-digit dialing.

Ten-digit dialing became required across the 214/469/972 region

With the 469 introduction and 214/972 boundary erasure, ten-digit dialing became required for all calls in the region.

NPA 945 approved as the fourth Dallas overlay code

On March 3, 2020, the Public Utility Commission of Texas approved area code 945 as the fourth overlay code for the Dallas region.

NANPA issued Planning Letter 537 on April 8, 2020 for the 214/469/972 and 945 all-services overlay.

NPA 945 overlay planned for Dallas area

Area code 945 was selected and approved by the Public Utility Commission of Texas in 2020 as a fourth overlay for the Dallas area to address projected number exhaustion by mid-2021. Central office codes became available on January 15, 2021, but activation is deferred until existing codes are exhausted.
