Area code 262 was created in 1999 from a split of 414, further dividing southeastern Wisconsin to address continued growth in telephone service demand.

NPA 262 split from 414

Area code 262 was implemented as a geographic split from 414 on September 25, 1999, after an initial overlay proposal was rejected due to resistance to mandatory ten-digit dialing. Nearly all of the old 414 territory outside Milwaukee County transferred to 262, with some parts of Waukesha and Washington counties remaining in 414.

Area code 262 transitions to mandatory ten-digit dialing

Area code 262 transitioned to mandatory ten-digit dialing on October 24, 2021, due to the nationwide designation of 988 as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline code. Prior to this, area code 262 had central office code 988 assigned, which conflicted with seven-digit dialing.
