NPA 715 established as original area code for northern Wisconsin

Area code 715 was created in 1947 as one of the original North American area codes, serving the northern part of Wisconsin. The code remained unchanged for over sixty years due to the region's low population density.

In October 1947, area code 414 was created as one of the two original area codes assigned to Wisconsin under the North American Numbering Plan. It initially covered most of southern and eastern Wisconsin, including Milwaukee.

In 1955, area code 608 was assigned to southwestern Wisconsin as a result of a border rearrangement of the existing 414 and 715 numbering plan areas. This change established a new area code to serve the region including Madison and surrounding counties.

The NANP announced a split of area code 414 to create area code 920 on January 15, 1997. Milwaukee and surrounding communities south of the city would retain 414, while the northern portion would receive 920.

The permissive dialing period for the 920/414 split ended on October 25, 1997, requiring callers to use the correct area code for calls in the respective regions, completing the transition from 414 to 920.

Area code 262 was implemented as a geographic split from 414 on September 25, 1999, after an initial overlay proposal was rejected due to resistance to mandatory ten-digit dialing. Nearly all of the old 414 territory outside Milwaukee County transferred to 262, with some parts of Waukesha and Washington counties remaining in 414.

In 2009, the City of Milwaukee officially began celebrating Milwaukee Day on April 14 ('4/14'), in honor of the city's area code. The day is marked by community events and local pride.

Mandatory ten-digit dialing becomes mandatory in NPA 414

Mandatory ten-digit dialing was implemented in area code 414 on October 24, 2021, due to the nationwide designation of 988 as the three-digit code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, which conflicted with existing seven-digit dialing in the area.
