Original 904 split plan proposed

The Florida Public Service Commission initially planned a three-way split of area code 904 in 1997, assigning area code 234 to Jacksonville, 386 to Daytona Beach, and retaining 904 for the panhandle. This plan was later changed due to public opposition and regulatory concerns.

Deltona switched to area code 386

In 2001, the Deltona area, previously served by area code 407, was switched to area code 386 after 386 was split from 904.

Area code 386 was created in 2001 from a split of 904. The city of Deltona, previously in 407, was reassigned to 386. The 321 overlay remained in the Orlando metro area but no longer issued new numbers there.

On February 15, 2001, area code 386 was created in a split from area code 904, serving two noncontiguous regions in northeastern and north-central Florida.

Permissive dialing period for area code 386

A permissive dialing period began on February 15, 2001, allowing calls to be completed using either the 904 or 386 area codes for affected numbers. This period lasted until November 5, 2001.

DeBary and Deltona switched from 407 to 386

The cities of DeBary and Deltona were reassigned from area code 407 to the newly created 386 area code on February 15, 2001. During the permissive dialing period, these areas could be reached using either 407 or 386, but not 904.

NPA 386 split from 904

In July 2001, area code 386 was created from a split of area code 904, serving two noncontiguous sections of the old 904 territory, providing relief for the rapidly growing regions outside Jacksonville. This unusual split was chosen to address rapid growth in the region and the exhaustion of available numbers.

Mandatory dialing of area code 386 begins

On November 5, 2001, the permissive dialing period ended and mandatory use of the 386 area code began for all calls in the affected region.
