Area code 904 split from 305

Area code 904 was created in 1965 by splitting the northern portion of Florida from area code 305. This change assigned 904 to all of north Florida, including Jacksonville, while 305 continued to serve the southeast. The split was made to accommodate the growing demand for telephone numbers in the region.

Permissive dialing for the new 324 overlay on area code 904 began in August 2023, allowing calls to be completed using either seven or ten digits in the Jacksonville and northeast Florida region.
