NPA 409 split from 713

On March 19, 1983, area code 713 was divided for the first time. Area code 409 was created to serve the northern, eastern, and western portions of the original 713 territory, while 713 was reduced to the immediate Houston area.

In 2000, area code 409 was divided, with the central portion centered on Nacogdoches receiving the new area code 936. This split reduced the geographic coverage of 409.

In 2000, area code 409 was divided, with the western portion centered on Bryan–College Station assigned the new area code 979. The eastern segment retained 409.

Area code 979 was created on February 13, 2000, in a geographic split from area code 409. The new code covered a region of Texas generally following the Brazos River, stretching from just south of Waco to the Gulf Coast, and included numerous counties and communities between the Austin and Houston metropolitan areas.

NPA 936 split from 409

Area code 936 was created on February 19, 2000, in a code-split from area code 409. The new code was assigned to the Nacogdoches-Huntsville area and surrounding counties in Deep East Texas.

Permissive 10-digit dialing begins in 409

On April 24, 2021, permissive 10-digit dialing began in area code 409 to accommodate the nationwide designation of 988 as the 3-digit code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. During this period, both 7-digit and 10-digit dialing were allowed.

Transition to 10-digit dialing in area code 409

On October 24, 2021, mandatory 10-digit dialing was implemented in area code 409. This change was required due to the nationwide adoption of 988 as a 3-digit code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, which conflicted with existing 988 central office assignments in 409.
