NPA 408 split from 415

On March 1, 1959, area code 408 was created in a flash-cut split from area code 415. The new 408 area code covered most of Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Monterey, and San Benito Counties, while 415 continued to serve the San Francisco Bay Area.

On July 11, 1998, area code 831 was created from a split of area code 408. The new 831 area code served Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito counties, while 408 was retained for the San Jose area and nearby communities.

An overlay complex was approved by the California Public Utilities Commission in late 1998 and formalized in January 1999 to introduce area code 669 as an overlay for the 408 numbering plan area to provide relief due to continued growth in telecommunications services.

On December 16, 1999, the California Public Utilities Commission suspended the implementation of planned overlays for area codes 408, 415, 510, 650, 714, and 909. This action was taken due to the adoption of telephone number pooling, which delayed the need for additional area codes.

A six-month permissive dialing period for the 408/669 overlay began on April 21, 2012. During this period, callers could use either seven-digit or 1+10-digit dialing for local calls within the affected area.

Mandatory 1+10-digit dialing for 408/669 overlay

On October 20, 2012, mandatory 1+10-digit dialing was implemented in the 408 and 669 area codes. After this date, all local calls required dialing the area code plus the seven-digit number.

On November 20, 2012, area code 669 was officially activated as an overlay for the 408 area code region. New telephone numbers could be assigned with the 669 area code, serving the same geographic area as 408.
