Area code 714 was created in 1951 from a split of 213, taking most of the southern and eastern portion of the original 213 area, including San Diego and most of Orange County. This change was part of a rearrangement to prepare for Operator Toll Dialing and direct distance dialing.

Area code 619 was created on January 1, 1982, from a split of 714, serving the San Diego region and surrounding areas in southern California. This was the first new area code in California since 1959.
