NPA 706 split from 404

Area code 706 was created in 1992 from a split of area code 404, taking most of the area outside the immediate Atlanta metropolitan region. This split was intended to relieve number shortages in North Georgia. The new code formed a horseshoe-shaped region wrapping around Atlanta and included several southern exurbs, though some of these were later returned to 404.

On May 3, 1992, area code 706 was split off from area code 404. The split removed most of the old 404 territory outside metro Atlanta and assigned it to 706.

33 communities returned from 706 to 404; permissive dialing ends

On March 29, 1993, the permissive dialing period ended for 33 communities that had been transferred from area code 706 back to area code 404. This boundary change was ordered by the Georgia Public Service Commission in response to community concerns.

Atlanta exurbs returned from 706 to 404

Several fast-growing exurbs of Atlanta that had been transferred to 706 were returned to 404 in spring 1993 after complaints from residents, leaving Columbus separated from the rest of 706.
