NPA 415 split to create NPA 707 in 1959

In 1959, area code 415 was split to create NPA 707 for northern California regions, including the northern coast, as part of a three-way split from 415, which also included the creation of area code 408 for San Jose and the South Bay.

In 1959, area code 408 was created from the southern part of 415, covering San Jose, the South Bay, Monterey Bay, and Salinas Valley. The split from 415 was part of the same 1959 division, but the existing record correctly attributes the creation of 408 separately from the 707 split.

A three-way, two-phase split of area code 707 was scheduled to create new area codes 369 and 627, but the California Public Utilities Commission cancelled the plan on July 27, 2000, due to the success of number pooling in preserving numbering resources.

Area code 707 transitioned to mandatory ten-digit dialing on October 24, 2021, due to the nationwide designation of 988 as the code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, which conflicted with existing 988 central office codes in the area.

California PUC approved 707/369 overlay

On June 23, 2022, the California Public Utilities Commission approved an all-services distributed overlay for the 707 area code. The new 369 area code was designated to serve the same geographic area as 707 to provide additional numbering resources.

The NANP Administrator set the effective implementation date for the overlay of area code 707 by the new area code 369 to February 1, 2023, to provide relief for numbering resource exhaustion in the region.
