On April 24, 2021, permissive 10-digit dialing began in the 708 area code in preparation for the 464 overlay and the nationwide implementation of 988 as a 3-digit code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Permissive 7-digit or 1+10-digit dialing began, allowing callers to use either method during this transition period. This change allows both 7-digit and 10-digit dialing in preparation for the transition to mandatory 10-digit dialing.
