NPA 470 To Overlay NPAs 404, 678, and 770 (Georgia)

NPA 470 overlay introduced

Area code 470 was added on September 2, 2001, as an overlay to the existing 404, 678, and 770 area codes in the Atlanta metropolitan area after exhaustion of 678. The new code provided additional numbering resources, with assignment of new prefixes delayed until 678 was exhausted.

Georgia PSC approves new overlay area code for Atlanta

In October 2020, the Georgia Public Service Commission approved the creation of a new overlay area code for the Atlanta metropolitan area, including codes 404, 770, 678, 470, and 943, in response to projected exhaustion of existing codes by mid-2023.
