Area code 641 was created in 2000 when the eastern and southern portions of area code 515 were split off. This change reduced 515 to cover only about one-fourth of its original area, including Des Moines and the region northwest of the city.

Area code 641 was created in a split of area code 515 on July 9, 2000. This was the first split in Iowa since the establishment of the area code system in 1947. The new code serves the central region of Iowa including Marshalltown, Mason City, and Ottumwa.

Permissive 10-digit dialing begins in 515

Permissive 10-digit dialing began on April 24, 2021, in area code 515 to accommodate the nationwide designation of 988 as the 3-digit code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. During this period, both 7-digit and 10-digit dialing were allowed.

Mandatory 10-digit dialing implemented in 515

Mandatory 10-digit dialing was implemented in area code 515 on October 24, 2021, following the nationwide adoption of 988 as a 3-digit code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Seven-digit dialing was discontinued to resolve conflicts with the 988 central office code.
