Initial Indiana area codes 317 and 812 assigned

The original 1947 North American Numbering Plan assigned area code 317 to the northern two-thirds of Indiana and 812 to the southern third, including cities such as Evansville, Terre Haute, and Bloomington. This was the first configuration of Indiana's area codes, with 812 retaining its original boundaries for more than six decades.

Overlay of 930 approved for 812

The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission approved an all-services overlay for the 812 area code on July 31, 2013, to address number exhaustion. The new 930 area code would serve the same geographic region as 812, marking Indiana's first overlay.

Permissive dialing begins for 812/930 overlay

Permissive 10-digit dialing began on March 1, 2014, for the 812 area code region in preparation for the 930 overlay. During this period, callers could use either seven or ten digits for local calls. This transition period was intended to help customers adjust to the upcoming mandatory ten-digit dialing.

In 2015, area code 930 was introduced as an overlay for area code 812, covering the same geographic region in southern Indiana.

Mandatory ten-digit dialing begins for 812/930 overlay

Mandatory ten-digit dialing was implemented on February 7, 2015, for the 812 and 930 overlay area codes. This change was delayed from the original September 6, 2014 date to allow emergency services more time to update equipment. Seven-digit dialing was discontinued. This change was required due to the overlay of 930 and affected all callers in the region.
