NPA 813 split from 305 for western Florida

Area code 813 was created in 1953 from a split of the original 305 area code, serving the western part of the Florida peninsula, including the Tampa Bay area and surrounding regions. This division reduced the coverage of 305 to the southeastern part of the state.

NPA 727 split from 813

Area code 727 was created in 1998 by splitting the western part of area code 813. The split followed county lines mostly, assigning Pinellas County and the western third of Pasco County to 727, while the remainder of 813 continued to serve the Tampa Bay area. The split was chosen over an overlay due to public resistance to overlays at the time.
