NPA 941 split from 813

Area code 941 was introduced on May 28, 1995, as a split from 813. The new code served the southwest coastal region of Florida, including Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte counties, and several others, covering thirteen counties south and east of Hillsborough County, from Manatee to Collier County.

Area code 941 was assigned in 1996 to 13 counties outside of the immediate Tampa Bay area, splitting from area code 813. This change left 813 serving only Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Pasco counties.

Area code 863 was created in 1999 from a split of 941, removing DeSoto, Hardee, Polk, Okeechobee, Glades, and Hendry counties from 941's coverage area. This was Florida's first land-locked area code.

Area code 863 was put into service on September 20, 1999, when the inland counties previously served by 941 were assigned the new code. The coastal counties retained 941, while the rest of the region received 863, giving the area its current boundaries.

Florida PSC authorizes split of 941 to create 239

On September 6, 2001, the Florida Public Service Commission authorized a two-way geographic split of the 941 area code. The new 239 area code was designated to serve Lee, Collier, and part of Monroe counties, while 941 would continue to serve Sarasota, Charlotte, and Manatee counties.

Permissive dialing period begins for 239

The permissive dialing period for the new 239 area code began at 12:01 AM Eastern Time on March 11, 2002. During this period, calls could be completed using either the old 941 or the new 239 area code for affected numbers in southwestern Florida.

Area code 239 was created for southwestern Florida when the southern half of area code 941, from North Fort Myers southward, was renumbered. The new code became active for service on March 11, 2002, covering Lee and Collier counties, parts of Hendry and Charlotte counties, and the Everglades National Park in mainland Monroe County.
